A memorial for 457 victims
Without the catastrophic landslide of 1806, there would be no Goldau Nature and Animal Park today. This statement formed the basis for us to develop both the basic architectural idea for the new park entrance and the scenography of the «Goldau Landslide Experience». In the landslide hall, the room-filling installation with massive concrete elements brings the dimensions of the event to life – and thus becomes a memorial to the 457 victims of Switzerland’s largest historical natural disaster. At the same time, the labyrinth of lintel blocks invites visitors to discover the once buried objects and stories. There are time capsules to discover – seemingly from the times of Jules Verne – with artefacts and video statements by experts, a memorial wall with the names of those 457 victims, the study room, the depot room, the historical relief models and much more.
The Film Arena
A special highlight is the fully software-generated film, which allows cinema guests to experience the landslide in real time. An LED video wall more than 10 metres wide, a Dolby Surround sound atmosphere as well as shaking platforms, for 24 people and one wheelchair, and wind effects make the landslide almost real. Enjoy the «live film trailer» …
The most powerful thing to experience in the new building is the «Goldau Landslide» – in three minutes real time.
Pioneer vegetation after the landslide
As a venue for temporary exhibitions, the gallery is currently showing a production entitled «New Life in the Goldau Landslide – Pioneers in the Debris Field» on the subject of pioneer vegetation – with real plants and interesting insights into the topics of «Succession» – which plant species colonise one after the other and «Process Protection versus Species Protection» – a globally unique approach to the coexistence of two diametrically opposed protection concepts in the same vegetation area.
